Collection, Categorization, and
Evaluation

Over several weeks, 683 people were asked to complete the prompt "I love myself because...". Of the 757 responses recorded*, each answer fell into one of ten categories. Each category then was dissected further, by tallying each answer given to find the top three most common answers per group. Responses were collected both in person and virtually. To learn more about when and how the data was collected, click here.

*Answers that fit more than one category or people that had several answers to one page were counted as individuals.

For example: "I love myself because I am good at volleyball and am very pretty." fits into the categories of School, sports and hobbies and Looks. Thus, they were counted as two separate answers, despite being from the same person.

After categorizing and tallying the data collected, it was studied. Results were analyzed in several ways, looking for these things:

  • What is good about this response? What is bad about it?

  • What does this response say about the respondent's self-image?

  • What about this response needs improving? How can that be achieved?

  • Does this response effectively complete the prompt?

Resources, advice, and actionable steps toward improvement were then found and provided for each category. Research showing how that category of answers applies to and impacts mental health is included. All suggestions to help better self-image and mental health are beginner-friendly, and several options are provided to be as inclusive as possible regarding time, budget, skill level, etc. This information can be found in the "Dig deeper" section listed below by clicking on the button for the category of your choice.

While ten categories might seem like a lot, there are distinct differences between them, and each group has several of its own subtypes. Each category has a corresponding button that will take you to a page with the details of this group. All pages have the same sections, but each has personalized data and information based on its category.

Each page shows:

  • What answers are included in this category

  • What the most common answers are for this category

  • How to interpret this answer and what it can mean regarding your self-image

  • Advice on how to use this to improve your mental health

All results and conclusions were drawn based on the answers provided in the survey. Observations and claims about mental health effects are based purely on the majority experience and are not applicable to everyone.

Categories with less than 95 answers have shortened sections due to less data. Categories that make up less than 5% of the total data are not included.
